The portfolio of successful new products that The Harshaw Research Group has had the privilege of assisting with continues to grow. The Harshaw Research Group prides itself on having real products licensed to real companies that are producing real results! Not all projects follow the same path, so it is crucial to work with a well-rounded staff of professionals that can adapt to each situation and who stay involved for the long run.
In an exciting extension of its commercialization services, The Harshaw Research Group has developed relationships with both US and foreign manufactures to produce product on a purchase order basis and then to assist clients with connecting inventories with distributors and retailers to place product directly into the market. In other words, licensing may be completely side-stepped where product is manufactured directly and moved directly to retail markets. This opportunity, while requiring more initial investment (e.g. product inventory), has the potential to produce a far more lucrative result to the inventor! With a product inventory, opportunities such as QVC, Home Shopping Network, and immediate mass retail become readily available!

Another passionate inventor makes good on his invention with the assistance of the product development crew at Harshaw Research, Inc. Here, the concept design engineering team at HRI worked with the inventor to refine the product concept and a strong utility patent was then obtained. Harshaw Research exists to assist inventors in getting to the next level but does not replace the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of passionate inventors.

The EZ Living Loft Bed is another example of Harshaw Research, Inc. in a supporting partnership with a true American entrepreneur. HRI’s engineering team and patent attorney Dale J. Ream became involved in the early stages to provide engineering and patent consultation to the inventor. Multiple non-provisional patents were issued as a direct result. The product is now available for sale by a long-time furniture manufacturer. HRI continues to support this innovative inventor by putting commercial agreements in place with the manufacturer.
Harshaw Research, Inc. was called upon by this entrepreneur/inventor to provide concept design engineering, prototyping, and patent assistance. Following receipt of a non-provisional patent and a functional prototype, this entrepreneur moved forward on her own to set up manufacturing and distribution. Another HRI client makes it to market, partly due to HRI’s experience and partly due to her plain old hard work! Congrats!.

This exciting product is a split tailgate for a pickup truck that quickly transforms into a pair of safe and secure ramps for loading convenience. The inventor is a farm equipment product representative from Kansas who called upon The Harshaw Research Group to improve and expand upon initial patent work and to carry out licensing of the eventual patent rights. After filing a Continuation-in-Part utility patent application, Harshaw Research worked closely with its client to develop commercialization relationships and promptly licensed the pending patent applications both in the United States and in Canada. Harshaw Research has remained actively involved as the Canadian licensee has now taken over world-wide operations. Harshaw Research has built a strong relationship with the licensee and is now assisting it with Canadian patent protection. After much R & D to control product cost, this licensee is now is now “ramped up” for enhanced sales and royalties to the inventor! This is another Harshaw Research inventor who has made a complete return on investment.

Having worked in the insulation packaging industry for many years, this inventor designed and built a new system and method for first compressing loose bulk material. It was clear early on that this system was superior to anything known in the industry and would certainly be copied if not protected. The Harshaw Research Group was honored to be chosen to assist in the refinement of the client’s initial design and to secure multiple non-provisional utility patents to protect its many unique features. After securing the largest licensing fee in Harshaw Research history for the inventor, Harshaw Research has gone on to provide valuable assistance to the licensee to secure Canadian and European patents and extend product sales internationally. The product itself is now being sold to recycling and insulation manufacturing plants and generating extensive royalties. It goes without saying that this client’s extensive investment in pursuing his new product ideas was instantly recouped. The manufacturer makes, sells, and trades multiple types of industrial equipment. www.reynoldseng.com

The Supra Glue™ project is one of many examples of how prototyping led to licensing. Working with a major materials research laboratory, a prototype for individualized glue packets having an extraordinarily long shelf life was developed. Soon after prototype development, HRI finalized an Exclusive License Agreement with a major U.S. supplier of automotive products. (www.agscompany.com) The Licensee has completed test marketing and is presently determining appropriate market segments into which to introduce the product. Full inventor investment has been exceeded already, primarily through negotiated up-front licensing fees.
An over-the-road truck driver selected The Harshaw Research Group to assist him in developing a product that he believed was needed to protect the health and safety of the elderly and disabled while maintaining their independent living. Specifically, he found that it is well documented that a large percentage of house fires result from inattentive cooking accidents. Harshaw Research’s engineers assisted with prototype development and, simultaneously, Harshaw Research attorneys teamed up to file multiple utility patent applications. With close cooperation with Harshaw Research, the inventor has secured an Exclusive License Agreement with a major distributor of home safety products. Details are still confidential as the final product is being developed, so check back frequently for updates as Harshaw Research is already very proud of this product success![back to top]
This product epitomizes the phrase “From Toys to Technology” used by Harshaw Research to describe the breadth of products that it has assisted with. This exciting handbag game was an early success story at Harshaw Research in that product refinement, patenting, and licensing to an international sports and institutional sales firm first brought this product to market many years ago. With the assistance of Harshaw Research, this inventor is now joining forces with a similar product to make a renewed and even bigger market introduction. This is now an excellent example of how Harshaw Research treats every project as a long-term investment.

Trinity is a multi-sensor fire detection system combining smoke detection, heat detection, and carbon monoxide detection within a single unit and is completely software driven. The Trinity project underwent concept design, patent protection, and international licensing utilizing the Synergistic New Product Development process developed by Harshaw Research. This product is at the opposite end of the “From Toys to Technology” spectrum!
Loaded with drawings of a bottle cap that enables ingredients to be blended with a beverage without having to carry and mix the two in separate containers prior to consumption, this client came to Harshaw Research with a desire to develop, patent, and commercialize his invention. The dispensing cap may be carried right on the bottle and dispensed into the beverage immediately before consumption. While providing a significant challenge to Harshaw Research’s in-house engineering department and patent counsel, it resulted in multiple utility patents being granted to provide the legal protection that was crucial before presenting this great idea to industry.
Although licensing this intellectual property did not come easy or fast, it has been well worth the wait and has returned this client’s investment many times over, even if only considering the major upfront licensing fee. With a combination of excellent negotiation by Harshaw Research and the rock solid ethics of a strategic alliance established by the licensee, this inventor has maintained a strong position of royalties despite many revisions of the exact means for carrying out the product.
Despite the desire of potential Harshaw Research clients to hear about every on-going successful project, Harshaw has been careful to maintain confidentiality while development of the actual shelf-ready product was prepared in secrecy. But stay tuned for the big market introduction coming soon.
This new product concept concerns a multiple layer construction of fabrics having previously unknown advantageous characteristics. While patent applications were still pending, The Harshaw Research Group successfully assisted the inventor in finalizing a non-exclusive license agreement directed at a specific industry segment. Harshaw Research maintains frequent contact with the licensee as products are being developed for future sale.
